Background The staff is pursu1ng projects relatlng to safety lmprovements. b1cycle facllit1es (as reported to the Counc1l 1n October 1979). signal modern1zatiQns (as budgeted) and one-way street lmprovements (as approved by Councll 1n 1979), The current emphas1s 1S to better utillze the exist1ng streets to carry the increasing traff1c WhlCh is anticipated by the several newly approved high r1se bUlld1ngs along the Wllshlre Corr1dor and other commerclal and resident1al developments. EX1st1ng streets can be better util1zed by modernlzing the antiquated slgnals, making selected streets one way. providing left turn and right turn lanes. and by provld1ng better pedestrlan and bicycle fac1llties. In add1t1on, the streets can and are being improved by beaut1f1catlon projects such as the numerous street tree assessment dlstricts. The only projects WhlCh relate to wldening that the staff currently has under conslderation are contemplated solely for lmproved pedestr1an and veh1cular safety. //(J; DEe 1 1 1979 -- -- -------- . . Llncoln Boulevard and Colorado Avenue: ThlS proposed project would eliminate a problem for eastbound traff1c on Colorado that w1shes to continue on Colorado through L1ncoln. The project wll1 a11gn the southerly curb of Colorado at the lntersectlon and provlde a translt10n 1n width. The estimated cost of this project 1S $100.000. The lntersectlon of Colorado and Lincoln is one of the most conJested ln the Clty. 2. 14th Street and P1CO Boulevard: This proposed reallgnment wl11 reduce a problem on the southwesterly corner. Southbound traffic on 14th Street must now negotiate a conslderable off-set when crossing Pico Boulevard. The pre1imlnary estlmated cost of thlS project 1S $60,000. 3. Ocean Park Boulevard and Llncoln Boulevard: This project will 1mprove the easterly approach of Ocean Park Boulevard at Llncoln. At the present time. No.1 lane trafflc must turn left. The only other lane must turn right or go stralght through Llncoln. This wlden1ng w111 allow a left turn pocket and two lanes for westbound trafflc lnstead of the present two lanes. The estlmated cost for thlS project lS $130,000. 4. C10verfleld Boulevard between Broadway and Santa Mon1ca Boulevard: This widen1ng was dlscussed at the November 27th Councll meeting at which time the purchase of necessary r1ght of way was approved. The new roadway wldth wl11 be 48 feet instead of the present 40 feet. This will proVlde one 13 foot. and one 11 foot lane ln each d1rection. lnstead of the present two 10 foot lanes and w111 provlde a transltion ln the wldth from the sectlon of Cloverfleld south of Broadway. The prellminary estimate for this project lS $200.000. . . To: Mayor and C1ty Council - 3 - December 3, 1979 5. Marlne Street between Neilson and Maln Street: Th1S wldening w1l1 reduce the curb llne offset for eastbound trafflc on Barnard Way wishing to go stralght on to Marine, crosslng Neilson Way. Also included will be the reconstructlon of the north curb to provide for a wider sldewalk. The preliminary estimated cost for this prOject 1S $75,000 and wlll be paid for by the developer who has submitted plans for the adjacent office buildlng.
