SR-506-003-08 (103) e e 7-13 '<,)~,i1 :7tJ~-c;O"3 ~ttJ & GS:SEs:sm June 30, 1987 Santa Monica, california INFORMATION ITEM TO: Mayor and city council FROM: city staff SUBJECT: Item 7-B: 728 Euclid Sidewalk Assessment Introduction During the public hearing on assessment of costs to repair damaged sidewalks, driveways, and curbs on June 23, 1987, the City council requested that City staff provide information clarifying the caUse for the sidewalk repair made by the City at 728 Euclid. The following provides the information as requested. Discussion The staff has reviewed the sidewalk replacement at 728 Euclid Street to see if it is possible that street trees caused this damage. Parks Superintendent Doug Stafford went to the site and probed to see if any roots were present near the sidewalk that could have raised it (even though the sidewalk was not raised and indeed was depressed about 2 inches). Mr. Stafford found no such roots. utility Manager Lash and Mr. Scholl visited the site and found several adjacent sections of sidewalk which were broken due to vehicle loads (see photos). Also it was noted that a red sports car was parked in the front yard of the subject site. This indicates that vehicles travel over the sidewalk and could have been the cause of the depression. Contrary to a statement at the Council meeting by the owner, there are no trees within "one foot" of the sidewalk. The nearest tree is 6 feet away. There may have beeD tree roots present under the sidewalk but they did not raise the sidewalk. ConClusion staff has determined that the sidewalk damage sustained at 728 Euclid was caused by vehicle loads rather than tree roots and that the assessment recommended in the staff report of June 23, 1987 be approved.
