Subject: Recommendation to Award Contract to Damon Construction
Company for the Construction of Handicapped Ramps at
Various Locations
INTRODUCTION
This report requests that city Council award a contract for, the
construction of handicapped ramps at various locations to Damon
Construction Company, the lowest responsible bidder, in the
amount of $86,900.
BACKGROUND
The major part of the annual ClP budget expenditure for
accessibility modifications consists of curb ramps for the
physically disabled at various locations throughout the city (see
attachment). A Notice lnvlting Blds was published on June 14 and
15, 1990, in the Evening outlook, in four construction journals
and
seven disadvantaged business
enterprise
associations.
Bidding documents were requested by four contractors. Three bids
were received, opened and read publicly by the Deputy city Clerk
on July 9, 1990, at 3:00 p.m. The bids were as follows:
Damon Construction Co. $ 86,900.00
Los Angeles Engineering, Inc. $107,050.00
8-1 Enterprises Corp. $118,700.00

Damon Construction has successfully completed several other curb
ramp projects for the city and favorable responses were received
from the references checked.

RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommended that the City Council:
1. Award a contract for construction of handicapped ramps at
various locations to Damon Construction Co., the lowest
responsible bidder, in the amount of $86,900.00; and
2. Authorize the City Engineer to issue change orders necessary
to complete the addi tional work to the extent of funds
available in accordance with the Administrative Instruction
on Change Orders.
