Urgent Notice: Homeowners and Residents Beware!
Once again we ue all.bout to be ripped oft! Plene read carefully and thoughtfully.
_ ~ '_....""<f"'!~c~~
We ~ll know that a s~all group o~ property owners in S~nset Park have vowed
to close Santa Monica Airport. Using noise as an issue, their ~ethoQ lS to ~~p~-
useless restrictions, one by one, that drive pilots avay 8nd eventually cause
financ~al ~ailure o~ long-established airport businesses. We are ?llots ~ho love
Santa Monica, who recogDlse that there are serious noise ~~oblems that are not
being properly ta..:ze!l care of, TI.(:lO ,,,ant. tc tre.ve:J.. in ar.::l out of the be..y area
freely for purposes o~ business anQ pleasure, and who believe the airport ~o be
a valuable asset not Just for ourselves, but for the airport nelghbors and the
communi ty at large as we ll.
Irr~giDe that the city were to close yo-~ streets ~rom 11 a~ Dlght to 7 ln
the morning so your neighbors would not be disturbed by your car or truck.
Wouldn't you be outraged at the curtai~ent of your freedom and the grave lDcon-
venience of not belng able to go to or fra~ your ho~e or buslDess~ Pilots are
no dlfferent - 0;::( occasion ','e mWct ~ly at cight, for reasons of -,'eather, late
events at other cities, or early appointments Euch as court c~tes. We don't do
it often, but all pilots TIust occaslonally fly at nlght. ~d is it really such -
burden? SlX fllghts a night, on the average, - less tha~ one per hour, or SlX-
tenths o~ one percent of the aay fllghts - occur duri~ this period, aCQ ~aLY of
these are landlTIgs, wlth the plane lD a very ~~let near-glide.
Because of past restrictions tne airport has already lost 150 places, Gnd
the tax dollars and revenue they generated. A closure at night woulQ drlve more
pilots away, and narrow the margin on some businesses to the point they would
have to close, costing the clty ~ore precious jobs and revenues from taxes, pay-
rolls, and traveller-related services.
That would be perfect for the airport ene~ies, who w1ll not rest until
another Century City sits on the hill, tall buildings adding congestion, blocklng
the skyline, and burdening the c1 ty ,'n th :naSSl ve cap1 tal expenditures and expen-
sive ongoing city services for which you vill h~ve to pay. Such areas always
cost the co=mity in which they occur in many ,,~ys, as studies have shm-m, ane.
benefit greatly only the developers.
The airport returns money to the city, acts as an ~pcrtaLt earthquake and
disaster relief and emergency landing facility, ~rotects the airspace of Santa
Monica frOIt the encroachment o"f heavy air traffic frOc. Los Angeles International
Airport, provides educational inspiration for the young, leaves a last bit of
open space in an already crowdee. city, ana serves thousands of residents with the
~ost inexpensive and fuel-efflcient fo~ of indivldualized mass transTIortation
currently available. (Did you know: one-thlrd of all &.lr travellers fly in
private planes, yet require only 3% of the aviation fuel consumed, and pOllute
less, and get more ~~les per galloD per seat than almost all automoblles. Jk~
airplane requires only a fe'" thousand feet of runway for the hundreds of miles
over which it may pass - we alreae.y ~ow how crowded our c~ties aLd c~xntrysides
are with exPensive freeways and streets.)
The cost is ~ominal noise for soce people who have chosen to live nearby in
homes that originally cost less than those in other areas. And a little-publicized
$27,000 study paid for by t::J.e Cl ty shows conclusively that the noise ~s worse in
the ~ areas of the city, from cars, buses, and other sources, than it 1S in
Sunset Park.
Airplane noise is belng reduced, by i=proveoents in procedures and in design
of ~odern aircraft, and the alrport ltself 1S getting quieter. We all reme~ber
the 24 hour a day flights out of Douglas in fantastically lODQ 4 engine planes
years ago. If we are willlTIg to try we can solve such real probleas as noisy and
lnconsiderate helicopter anQ airplane pilots by demandi~ proper enforcereent of
the laws and procedures we already havel
Your choice probab~ depends on whether or not you lntend to enJoy living
In this area for a long time. Airport closure mi~ht brlng higher property values,
Which is great for the speculators, but nigher values mean hi&1er assess:r::ents,

Mayor Donna Swink
City of Santa Monica
Room 200, City Hall
Santa Monica, CA 90401
Dear Mayor Swink:
I am writing on behalf of many deeply concerned
citizens of the City of Los Angeles 11th Council District,
which I represent. These citizens live near the Santa Monica
Airport and are plagued by the problems the airport brings to
the residential neighborhood adjacent to the airport.
Noise is the chief issue. The residents of Venice
and Mar Vista suffer immeasurably from the noise of low-flying
aircraft.
I support the ban on flights of any kind from 11 p.m.
to 7 a.m. I support the proposal to phase out helicopter flight
tra1n1ng. I support the proposal to require helicopters to fly
at an altitude of 700 feet rather than 500 feet. I support any
and all measures to rid the area of noise pollution.
I know that you have beard froN many citizens of
your own city regarding their support for these anti-noise measures.
I feel it is essential that the Los Angeles citizens in near
proximity to the airport have their message beard through this
letter. I would be most grateful if you would make the letter part
of the public record at the ~ugust 23 meeting of the Santa Monica
City Council.
Very truly yours,
~
