SUBJECT: Recommendation to Approve Fireworks Display as Part of
the opening Celebration of the West End of the Santa
Monica P~er
INTRODUCTION
This report requests that the City Council approve a four minute
fireworks display as part of the celebration of the opening of
the west end of the Pier. The display would be fired from the
beach north of the Pier at dusk on Saturday, April 7, 1990 and
serve as the finale for the two day opening event.
BACKGROUND
The city of Santa Monica is planning a two day celebration on
April 6 and 7, ~990 to mark the grand opening of the west end of
the Pier. The official dedication ceremony will be held at 12:30
p.m. on Friday, April 6. The celebration will continue on
Saturday, April 7, with a "Come Home to the Pier" schedule of
events from noon until 8 p.m. The finale will be the fireworks
salute at 7:45 p.m.
DISCUSSION
City staff has selected San Diego Fireworks to produce the show.
The d~splay will consist of 220 shells and will last four
minutes. By contrast, the "Dawn's Early Lightl1 show contained
1,500 shells. The cost of the fireworks salute is $2,500. The
salute will be fired from the beach north of the Pier. The

firing area will be fenced off and a stand-by firefighter will be
on duty.
BUDGET!FI~ANCIAL IMPACT
There are sufficient funds in Account 30-500-625-00000-2261-00000
to cover the cost of the fireworks salute.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the city council approve the fireworks
display on April 7, 1990 as part of the opening celebration of
the west end of the Pier.
