George Bundy, Acting City Manager ~B1e .US~.1.0 Ii;f..
C. V. Fitzgerald, Airport Director ~~TUB~~'8 Ol~lU>>
Clfi."oJl .vJ.L1lllU.
A REPORT TO THE CITY ~~AGER AND COUNCIL REGARDING THE
AIRPORT SPACE SHOW AND DEDICATION, SAT-SUN., March 14-15, 1959/
March :l6, 1959
Santa Monica Airport played host to over 100,000
people during the past eventful two-day airport free space show,
airport dedication as a historical landmark and ground-breaking
ceremonies.
This past weekend, I firmly believe, has done more
to cement good ~avora~le relations and to publicize the airport
in the right perspective as a tremendous public-owned facility
and one that Santa Monicans can be proud of, than anything ever
attempted at tho airport in the past.
The airport, the past two days, was able to furnish
a good clean family-type entertainment that was deslreable as
reflected by the fact that it became an ~ediate hit. The pUb1LG
response was tremendous and heart-warming.
The Santa Nonica Police Department, through their
Police Reserves, the Public Works, Recreation and Transportation
Departments are to be commended for their ~lne teamwork in aiding
the Airport Department on the many problems in coordinating
such an affair. The fact that not one incident, accident or
injury marred the record crowd-gathering is testimony to their
cooperation.
With your approval and the Councilts permission, I
would like to inaugurate this type of an event into an annual
affair that should rerlaet tremendous favorable publicity and
prestige to Santa Monica and its airport.

Gentlemen:

~
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Santa Monica Chamber of
Commerce, may I thank you for the fine cooperation of the City in the
recently held City-Chamber sponsored "Space Show" at our Municipal
Airport .
-
~n
u:;;;
I would especially like to pass on to you the comments of our Aviation
Committee Chairman, Lionel LeBel, and Phil Grissell, Assistant Manager
of the Chamber, regarding the complete cooperation and untiring effort~
of Airport Director~ Clyde Fitzgerald.
As you know~ this special event was a "first" for all of us - it was
arranged on a very limited budget - but everyone con.'1ected with the
event is of the enthusiastic opinion that this type of program might
well be an armual affair which would continually call to the attention
of the public the many fine facilities on our airport.
~ay I suggest, if it has not already been done, that an official letter
from the City of Santa Monica be directed to Capt. Richard Schaller,
Special Projects Officer, Los Angeles Office of Information Services,
of the Air Force, 6085 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood 28, California, who,
upon receiving the Chamber's request that the Air Force supply a missle
display, came up with the idea and made the arrangements for bringing
in the C-133 which was christened "City of Santa Monica Schools".
I believe the publioity gained for Santa Monica from this one particular
facet of the entire program warranted the time~ effort and small amount
of money spent by the City and the Chamber.
Our sincere thanks also to Councilman Rex }.finter who served on the
Chamber's Aviation Committee and who acted as !~ster of Ceremonies for
the dedication of the airport sponsored by the Native Daughters of the
Golden West.

Re: Chamber of Commerce (City Council Agenda)
Dear Fir. Bundy:
On behalf of the Santa Monica Chamber of Corr~erce,;r wvuld
appreciate your causing the following matter to be placed f
on the agenda for the meeting of the Santa Monica City
Council scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on 18 November 1958~~
Ci , ~
The Aviation Committee of the Chamber of Commerce has made
plans, subject to the approval of the City Council, to hold
an exhibit, open to the public, of various aeronautical
and rocket displays at the Santa Monica Airport. This is
tentatively set for the 14th and 15th of r1arch 1959.
:tf
In conjunction therewith, lt is planned that Santa Monica
Airport will be dedicated as a historical monument, in view
of the role played by Cloverfleld in local aeronautical
history, said dedication to be under the auspices of the
Native D21J,g;hters of the Golden \fest, lo'lho initially proposed
this step.
A req~est has been initiated to the United states uepartment
of Defense, through the office of Congressman Donald Jackson,
for approval by that Departnent of this proposed exhibit.
Our Committee has conferred with a member of the staff of the
Unlted States Air Force experienced in such matters and it
is our understanding that free exhibits can be made available
by the Armed Forces and various companies manufacturing
aeronautical and rocket items for the Armed Forces for a public
purpose of this nature. Negotiations are under way for the
donation of the use of hangers for display area. This project
has been presented to the Santa Monica Airport Commission, which
body approved the plans at its meeting of November 6, 1958.
Various plans have been made for the obtaining of appropriate
insurance and arranging various other details.

This letter u sublntted to lUIlll1end our letter of 16 August,

up to date certa.in de.ired changes in the original proposal
for your cone :lde rat ion.
Due to the conflict of the orip.nal Halloween date with
numerou8 school and civic functions, we feel that the
preceding week-end of October 2;rd and 24tb will be more
satisfactory for all concerned.
We are fortunate in tentatively seourlng the services of
the Ferris Greater Shows,State and Oounty fair type carnival,
wh~ch recently com.!)leted a successful engagement at the

S"'NT'" MONICA, CALIFORNIA
16 August 1948
Airport Director
Airport Commission
City Council
City ot Santa Monica, California
Gentlemen:
The Santa Monica Junior Chamber of Commerce desires
to sponsor a second A nnt18.1 Free Air Carnival at
Clover Field, Santa Monica Municipal Airport this
tall.
You will recall that last October 3rd and 4th a very
suocessful Air Carnival was staged at Clover Field,
attended by approximately 20,000 people. It was be-
lieved at the time that these two days proved of
great value to the city and the airport. The show
was immensely enjoyed by everyone.
The organizations and individuals who last year bad
to be sold on the feasibility of suoh an undertaking
have enthusiastically besieged the Junior Chamber
throughout the year to make this an annual event.
Consequently, the Junior Chamber has authorized their
Aviation Committee to initiate negotiations for a
Halloween Free Air Carnival October 30th and 31st
providing that these dates do not conflict with
other muniCipal activities, with the bad weather
alternate date being the following week-end.
Similar to last year's show, this will be a unique
departure from the usual air show in that the
participation will be by non-professional flyers in
private aircraft and will be designed to promote
safety of aviation and will not incorporate any
stunt or reckless flying. Vie contemplate the sale
of airplane rides as last year, civil and military
ground exhibits, a complete kiddie oarnival and a
Halloween hangar dance....a program designed to
attract the entire family to the airport for all.day.
We hope that such a project will improve public
relations and understanding of the ever increasing

importance of Clover Field to the bay area.
We respectfully request permission of the city to
stage this carnival; to supply necessary physical
facilities and bleachers and to provide cooperation
by the police and fire departments. As in last
year's carnival, no monetary appropriation by the
city 1s desired. Expenses will be defrayed by a
nominal parking charge for those desiring to park in
an area operated by the Junior Chamber and by
commissions on concessions. The sale of advertising
will defray the cost ot printing the program which,
this year, will be given away free.
Attached, for your information, is a copy of last
year's program.
