INCREASE OF ON-STREET PARKING METER RATES IN ZONE A
Introduction
This report introduces a proposed ordinance to increase the on-street parking
rate from 10~ per hour to 25C per hour in the area bounded by Callfornia Avenue,
Colorado Avenue~ Ocean Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard.
Background
Recently the Clty Council authorlzed the increase of parking meter rates in the
Main Street area to reflect more current parking meter rates. Staff bel1eves
that parking meter rates 1n the area bounded by California Avenue, Colorado
Avenue, Ocean Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard (Zone A) should also be increased
to reflect the more current parklng meter rates.
The Santa Monica Munlcipal Code (Section 3393A (2)) states that "parking a vehlc1e
in a designated space in Zone flAil shall be lawful for 60 minutes upon the deposit
of 10 cents in coin, and for an additlonal 60 minutes for each 10 cents in COln
deposited thereafter." There is a two hour maximum 1imlt for parking.
Consldering current lnflation rates and the high demand for on-street parklng,
Staff is proposing to increase the parking meter rates in Zone "A" from 10<: per
hour to 25~ per hour. The present rate is too low to generate a turn-over of
vehlcles. The proposed lncrease will requlre an expenditure of $60~OOO from
the Parking Meter Fund for the replacement of 934 parking meters in this zone.
The City will realize this expenditure of funds in less than one year 1n in-
