SUBJECT: Recommendation to Adopt a Resolution Declaring May
21-27, 1989 Public Works Week
Introduction
This report requests that the Council adopt a resolution
declaring May 21-27, 1989, Public Works Week in the City of Santa
Monica.
Background
The American Public Works Association, in cooperation with
several governmental, engineering, and other public works
associations, has designated May 21-271 1989 to be National
Public Works Week. The week was designated as such to recognize
the many services performed by public works officials.
Such
services include civil and traffic engineering, street cleaning
and maintenance, public facility maintenance I refuse collection,
recyclingl pier and harbor management, cemetery management I water
production and distributionl and wastewater management.
BUdget/Financial Impact
There is no budget/financial impact.

Recommendation
It is recommended that the city council adopt the attached
resolution declaring May 21-27, 1989, Public Works Week.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DECLARING MAY 21-27, 1989 PUBLIC WORKS WEEK
WHEREAS, public works services provided in the City of
Santa Monica are an integral part of our citizen' s everyday
lives: and
WHEREAS I the support and understanding of the City I s
citizens are vital to the efficient operation of public works
systems and programs such as civil engineering, traffic
engineering, street cleaning and maintenance, refuse collection,
recycling, household hazardous wastes, public buildingsl pier and
harbor,
cemetery,
water production and distribution,
and
wastewater management: and
WHEREAS, the health, safetYI and comfort of the
citizens of the City of Santa Monica greatly depend on these
facilities and services: and
WHEREAS, the quality and effectiveness of these
facilities and services, as well as their planning, design,
construction, and delivery, are dependent upon the efforts and
skills of public works officials: and
WHEREAS, the efficiency of the qualified and dedicated
personnel who staff the public works programs is materially
influenced by the people IS atti tude and understanding of the
importance of the work they perform,

NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. May 21-27, 1989 is hereby proclaimed Public
Works Week in the city of Santa Monica.
SECTION 2. Citizens and civic organizations are called
upon to acquaint themselves with the problems involved in
providing our public works and to recognize the contributions
that public works officials make each day to our health, safety,
and comfort.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify the adoption
of this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter, the same
shall be in full force and effect.
