This report requests the Ci ty Councl.l hold a public hearing for the
asseSSment of costs to repal.r damaged sldewalks, driveways and cur bs
at var~ous areas Wl t hl n the C~ t Y . It 15 recommended that Council
adopt the attached Resolution confirm~ng the assessment of costs.
Background
On September 10, 1985, the C1ty Council set a public hearing for
October 1 , 1985, on the assessment of costs to repair damaged
sldewalks, driveways and curbs w1thin the C1 t Y of Santa Monica.
Letters were malled ten days 10 advance (September 20, 1985) to
property owners 1 n for mi n g them of the p ubI i c hearlng 1.0 accordance
wlth the legal requirements of Chapter 22 of the Improvement Act of
1911.

ThlS assessment dlstrict wl.ll generate revenues to the Ci ty over the
next two years in the amount of !?2,598.S0. (Any unpal.d assessments

cost of the sldewalk repa1r wlll be assessed aga1nst your
property, and you wlll be notlfled of the manner of payment.
The Clty will prov1de flnanc~al ass~stance for low-to-moderate
income persons. If your income lS less than $16,150 for a
famlly of one person, $18,450 for two persons, $20,750 for
three persons or $23,050 for four persons, call for lnformation
on thlS program.

STREET SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
REPAIR OF DAMAGED SIDE\iALKS, DRIVEWAYS, CURBS AND/OR REMOVAL
OF OBSTRUCTIONS, PERFORMED UNDER PROVISIONS OF DIVISION 7 ,
CHAPTER 22, SECTIONS 5600 TO 5630, OF THE STREETS AND HIGHWAYS
CODE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA CSR-85-71)
Pursuant to the provIsions of DIVIsion 7, Chapter 22, Sections
5600 of 5630, of the Streets and HIghways Code of the State of
CalIfornIa, the folloWIng work was c au sed to be done by the Street
SuperIntendent:
The removal and replacement of 24 lIneal feet of curbing at
$12 per lineal foot;
The removal and replacement of 14 lIneal feet of curbIng at
$10 per lIneal foot;
The removal and replacement of 808 square feet of SIdewalk at
$4 per square foot;
The removal of 481 lineal feet of PC concrete at $2 per
lIneal foot; and
The removal and replacement of 115 square feet of PC concrete
on driveways at $5 per square foot.
The total cost of the above work was $5,197.00
The total proposed assesment for the above sidewalk and curb
d arnag e IS $2,598.50 or 50 percent of the total cost. The other 50
percent of the cost IS beIng paid by the CIty as the above repaIrs
were caused by tree root damage.
Reference IS made to the attached sheets for a
descrIptIon of the real property 1n froni: of Whl~h the work has been
done, the proposed assessment against ea~h property, and a des~riptlon
of the work done In front of each property.

WHEREAS, the Street Superintendent of the City of Santa

Code, commenced proceedings to cause the repa1r of damaged sidewalks, -

WHER8AS, SIxty days after sa1d order was served, the work had

SECrlON 5. If the assessment is not pald w1thln the time
permitted by law, the Superlntendent of Streets, 1n aecordance with
Sectlon 5628 of the Streets and Hl.ghways Code, shall deliver a Not1ce
of Lien, prepared in the manner requll:ed by Section 5626 of the
Streets and Highways Code, to the County Audltor who shall collect the
assessment together wlth all other taxes against the property.
