Removal of Tree at 2317 California Avenue,
Santa Monica
Introduction
Mr Z Tamosauskas, resident of 2317 California Avenue, Santa
Monica, has requested the removal of a lar?e Bottle Tree
(Brachychiton) located 1n the City right-of-way in front of
his property.
~ackground
In a letter dated March 31, 1978, Mr Tamosauskas requested
removal of subject tree contending that the tree (1) was

breaking the curb, (2) damaged the walkway to his horne, and
(3) is causing damage to his house. He also stated that
the sidewalk adjacent to the tree has been renlaced three
times due to tree damage.
City staff inspected subject tree on April 4, 1978, and found
it to be in excellent condition
The sidewalk adjacent to the
tree has been replaced within the last two weeks and may have
been replaced on other occasions in the last several years. The
curb, which appears to be original, has a few minor cracks.
Mr Tamosauskas' private walkway is faulted less than one inch
The cause of this faulting is not apparent. The house is 25 feet
from the tree
There is no evidence to support the contention

that the tree is causin3 cracks along the front of the house
near the porch.
There are 76 other Bottle Trees on California Avenue.
Reconnnendation
It is the staff recommendation that the tree not be removed.
