SUBJECT: Resolution Authorizing the City Manager to Execute a Memorandum of
Understanding with the Santa Monica Firefighters, Local 1109, IAFF
INTRODUCTION
This report requests that Council adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the City
Manager to execute a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Santa Monica
Firefighters, Local 1109, IAFF.
BACKGROUND
The current Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Santa Monica Firefighters,
Local 11 09, IAFF (Local 11 09) expired on June 30, 2000. As per the terms and conditions
of the expired MOU, negotiations with Local 11 09 to replace the expired MOU commenced
and resulted in the attached MOU. This new agreement has been ratified by the
membership of Local 1109.
This agreement provides for the following: a cost of living increase for FYOO-01; FY01-02
and FY02-03; adjustments to various employee benefits, such as uniform allowance, paid
time off, EMT bonus, performance bonus and education incentive pay to bring Local 11 09

compensation and benefits in line with the prevailing labor market; implementation of an
enhancement to the Public Employees' Retirement System program; and some other
minor economic and non-economic changes.
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
Funds are already included in the budget for FYOO-01 to cover any costs associated with
this agreement.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that Council adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the City
Manager to execute the attached Memorandum of Understanding with the Santa Monica
Firefighters, Local 1109, IAFF.
