A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DECLARING A VACANCY ON THE CITY
COUNCIL
WHEREAS, City Couhcil Member and former Mayor Herb Katz passed away on
January 7, 2009 after decades of devoted public service; and
WHEREAS, Herb Katz's death leaves a vacancy on the City Council; and
WHEREAS, City Charter Section 603 governs. the filling of vacancies on the City
Council; and
WHEREAS, Section 603 provides that the City Council may fill a vacancy on the
City Council by appointment but. must do so within thirty (30) days of declaring the office
vacant; and
WHEREAS, in order to start the appointment period, the City Council must
declare the existence of the vacancy.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AND DECLARE AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. The death of City Council Member and former Mayor Herb Katz
has created a vacancy on the Santa Monica City Council.
SECTION 2. Council Member Katz's office is hereby declared vacant.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, and
thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
