A special meet~ng of the Santa Mon~ca City Council was called to
order by Mayor Edwards on Thursday, August 2, 19811, at 6:05 P.M.
in the Counc~l Chambers, having been called to consider approval
of a permit for fireworks display durlng the forthcoming Olymp~cs
period.

FIREWORKS DISPLAY/BEACH CLUB: Mayor Edwards requested the record
to reflect that the meeting had been called after a poll of
Councilmembers in whlch a maJor1ty of members concurred 1n regard
to the request to hold a Special Meeting.
Presented was a staff report provld~ng informatIon in regard to
the request of the Santa Monica Beach Club, 201 Pal~sades Beach
Road, to conduct a f~reworks display on August 4, 1984, in
conJunct1on with an event sponsored by the Los Angeles Olympics
Organization Committee (LAOOC).
Councllmember Epstein moved to approve the application thereby
permltting the Beach Club to conduct a fireworks d~splay on
August 4, 1984; to hnd that the approval is in recognition of
the unusual circumstances of the Olymp1cs and the fact that this
event, which occurs no more than once a generat1on, has generated
a tremendous sp~r~t in the C~ty and and thIS ~s in the spirit of
cooperation WIth the Olympics. Second by Mayor Pro Tempore
Press. During discussion, and there being no objection,
Councilmember Epstein added to the motlon authorlzation to staff
to Impose reasonable conditlons of time, place and safety. Julie
Mulveny and Patrick Maloney, representlng the LAOOC, described
the f~reworks event adding that the display would last from 10 to
15 m~nutes and conclude at 9:30 P.M. Councilmember Epstein, w1th
no objection from the second, added the 9:30 P.M. hour lnto the
motion. Additional discusslon was held. The motlon was approved
by the following vote:

At 6:13 P.M. Councllmember Epsteln moved to adjourn the meeting.
