RESOLUTION NO. 8716 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA SUPPORTING THE SANTA MONICA CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU APPLICATION FOR RELIEF FROM U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, STATE OF CALIFORNIA TRADE AND COMMERCE AGENCY AND ANY OTHER PERTINENT FEDERAL OR STATE FUNDING SOURCE. WHEREAS, Travel and Tourism is one of Santa Monica's most important economic mainstays, generating over $300 million annually in visitor spending, and WHEREAS, Travel and Tourism employs more than 5,000 Los Angeles area residents, including thousands of minorities, female heads of household, seniors and teenagers, most of whom are citizens of Santa Monica, who are dependent upon travel and tourism for their livelihoods, and WHEREAS, Santa Monica'S travel and tourism industry has been adversely affected by the January 17 NorthridgejReseda Earthquake, resulting in the closure of many hotel rooms, and WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the region to preserve the flow of tourism dollars into the community for the purpose of generating local jobs and tax revenues, and WHEREAS, late winter and spring are the critical planning seasons for summer travel, the local market's most important tourism season, and . . WHEREAS, it is imperative that creative tourism promotion efforts be made to bring visitors back to Santa Monica, from Western Europe, the Pacific Rim and other areas of the united States, and WHEREAS, Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau needs financial assistance to maintain the integrity of the local tourism economy in light of the recent disaster, NOW, THEREFORE, Santa Monica city council does resolve to support the visitors Bureau application for Federal and/or state grants for the purpose of postquake tourism recovery.
