A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA IN SUPPORT OF THE
DESIGNATION OF SANTA MONICA PIER CAROUSEL
BUILDING AS A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK
WHEREAS, the National Park Service has completed a
study of the Santa Monica Pier Carousel Building for the purpose
of nomination as a National Historic Landmark; and
WHEREAS, the study recognizes the Santa Monica pier
Carousel Building, originally named Looff's Hippodrome, as a rare
intact example of an early shelter structure built to house a
carousel in an amusement park; and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica, as owner of the
Santa Monica Pier Carousel Building, has made a significant
investment in the restoration of the building and the carousel;
and
WHEREAS, the designation of the santa Monica pier
Carousel as a National Historic Landmark places no constraints on
how the City of Santa Monica may manage the Carousel Building, as
long as the City does not use Federal funds or require a Federal
license or permit to carry out its actions, in which case an
advisory review is required by the National Advisory Council on
Historic Preservation,

NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The city council affirms its continuing
support of the preservation and operation of the Santa Monica
pier Carousel Building as an historic recreational resource.
SECTION 2. The city Council supports the nomination of
the Santa Monica Pier Carousel Building as a National Historic
Landmark in recognition of its significance as the principal
intact historic element on the santa Monica Pier.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the
adoption of this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the
same shall be in full force and effect.
