A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA SUPPORTING THE
TRANSFER OF THE WETLANDS PARCEL KNOWN AS THE
BALLONA NORTHEAST INTO THE CALIFORNIA PARK SYSTEM
WHEREAS, Ballona Northeast ("Area C") is a state owned 70 acre wetlands and
wetlands-supporting land parcel in close proximity (under 3 miles) to the City of Santa
Monica; and
WHEREAS, because wetlands act as natural water pollution filters, a restored
wetlands and park at Ballona Northeast will protect and enhance water quality in Santa
Monica Bay, benefitting residents of Santa Monica; and
WHEREAS, the Los Angeles region which includes Santa Monica is the most under-
parked metropolitan area in the United States; and
WHEREAS, a restored wetlands and park at Ballona Northeast will preserve and
increase habitat for plants and animals, including endangered species, thus enhancing
biodiversity and the regional environment of which Santa Monica is a part; and
WHEREAS, a restored wetlands and park at Ballona Northeast will provide
accessible open space for Santa Monica residents as well as safe recreational, social and
educational enrichment opportunities; and

WHEREAS, a restored wetlands and park at Ballona Northeast will attract tourism
dollars to our region, benefitting the City of Santa Monica, its businesses and residents;
and
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCil OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOllOWS:
SECTION 1. The City of Santa Monica hereby supports transferring Ballona
Northeast ("Area C") into the California State Park system as a key element in addressing
our regional open space deficiencies and providing environmental, aesthetic, recreational
and economic benefits to the people of Santa Monica.
SECTION 2. The City Council hereby directs City staff to convey this position in
favor of the transfer of Ballona Northeast ("Area C") into the California State Park system
to regional representatives in the state Assembly and Senate, to the Governor, to the
California Secretary of Resources, and to other bodies, such as the Coastal Commission,
where appropriate.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, and
thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
