R-9538 f:\atty\mu ni\laws\mjm\workers. wpd City Council Meeting 6-27-00 Santa Monica, California RESOLUTION NUMBER9538 (CCS) (City Council Series) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA EXPRESSING ITS COMMITMENT TO FAIR AND EQUITABLE TREATMENT OF ALL WORKERS WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica's commitment to fair and equitable treatment of all members of the community is deep and long-standing; and WHEREAS, this commitment extends particularly to those most vulnerable, including low-wage workers; and WHEREAS, the right of low-wage workers freely to organize and represent their interests is recognized, valued and supported in federal, state and local law; and WHEREAS, on December 15, 1997, a community hearing was held to consider charges of union-busting and other abuses by a local employer; and WHEREAS, the panel which conducted that hearing submitted a report to the City Council which included the finding that a local hotel had engaged in an aggressive and inappropriate campaign to prevent hotel workers from unionizing; and WHEREAS, upon receipt of the aforementioned report the City Council expressed its commitment to fair treatment of all workers in the City; and 1 WHEREAS, recent reports indicate another local hotel is engaging in similarly reprehensible, anti-union activities; and WHEREAS, responsible businesses in the area such as Staples Center, the Hollywood Holiday Inn and various employers at the Los Angeles International Airport have chosen to respect their workers' right to organize a union by agreeing to remain neutral and to recognize the validity of a card-check election; and WHEREAS, it is apparent that workers' seeking better lives for themselves and their families is a courageous and empowering practice which leads to economic and social benefits for the entire community, NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of Santa Monica affirms the City's commitment to fundamental fairness and justice in labor, shares in the community's stated aversion to union-busting, and calls upon local businesses to respect worker dignity, management neutrality and the right to choose union representation without intimidation by means such as third party card-check petitions. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect. APPROVED AS TO FORM: , /,111 .'
