City Council Meeting 6-27-00
Santa Monica, California
RESOLUTION NUMBER9538 (CCS)
(City Council Series)
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA EXPRESSING ITS
COMMITMENT TO FAIR AND EQUITABLE TREATMENT
OF ALL WORKERS
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica's commitment to fair and equitable treatment
of all members of the community is deep and long-standing; and
WHEREAS, this commitment extends particularly to those most vulnerable,
including low-wage workers; and
WHEREAS, the right of low-wage workers freely to organize and represent their
interests is recognized, valued and supported in federal, state and local law; and
WHEREAS, on December 15, 1997, a community hearing was held to consider
charges of union-busting and other abuses by a local employer; and
WHEREAS, the panel which conducted that hearing submitted a report to the City
Council which included the finding that a local hotel had engaged in an aggressive and
inappropriate campaign to prevent hotel workers from unionizing; and
WHEREAS, upon receipt of the aforementioned report the City Council expressed
its commitment to fair treatment of all workers in the City; and
1
WHEREAS, recent reports indicate another local hotel is engaging in similarly
reprehensible, anti-union activities; and
WHEREAS, responsible businesses in the area such as Staples Center, the
Hollywood Holiday Inn and various employers at the Los Angeles International Airport have
chosen to respect their workers' right to organize a union by agreeing to remain neutral and
to recognize the validity of a card-check election; and
WHEREAS, it is apparent that workers' seeking better lives for themselves and their
families is a courageous and empowering practice which leads to economic and social
benefits for the entire community,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of Santa Monica affirms the City's
commitment to fundamental fairness and justice in labor, shares in the community's stated
aversion to union-busting, and calls upon local businesses to respect worker dignity,
management neutrality and the right to choose union representation without intimidation
by means such as third party card-check petitions.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, and
thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
