R-10125 f: \atty\mu n i\laws\mj m \genocidereso City Council Meeting 4-11-06 Santa Monica, California RESOLUTION NUMBER 10125 (CCS) (City Council Series) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA PROCLAIMING APRIL OF EACH YEAR TO BE SURVIVORS AND VICTIMS OF GENOCIDE REMEMBRANCE MONTH WHEREAS, genocide, a term not known until the Twentieth Century, is one of the most serious crimes against all of humanity; and WHEREAS, incidents of genocide occurred through the Twentieth Century, and are continuing to occur in the Twenty-First Century and into 2006; and WHEREAS, following World War II, the world pledged that genocide would "Never Again" occur, but it does in fact continue to occur; and WHEREAS, the surviving victims of genocide are often forced to leave their lands as refugees, and are often separated from their families; and WHEREAS, the continuing commission of acts of genocide is an affront to the dignity of every human being, and all reasonable efforts must be used to both prevent acts of genocide, and to stop them once they start; and 1 WHEREAS, the genocides which have occurred in various locations have continued for prolonged periods of time, and there is no one day which commemorates all of the genocides which have occurred and which continue to occur, NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The City of Santa Monica hereby proclaims April of each year to be Survivors and Victims of Genocide Remembrance Month. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
