A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA URGING THE GOVERNOR
AND STATE LEGISLATURE TO SUPPORT AB 1058 REGARDING
REDUCTION OF CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS FROM PASSENGER CARS
AND LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS
WHEREAS, global warming is a matter of utmost concern for the public health, the
environment, and the economy of California; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes has
determined that by 2100, global warming will increase global mean surface temperature
from three to eleven degrees Fahrenheit, raise sea levels by up to three feet, cause the
retreat of glaciers worldwide, and accelerate incidents of EI Nino and resulting droughts
and floods; and
WHEREAS, global warming is projected to increase smog in areas such as the
South Coast Air Basin, causing increased hospitalization and health care costs to the state;
and
WHEREAS, global warming is projected to have severe economic impacts to
California's agriculture, fishing, aviation, tourism, construction, insurance, trucking, and
skiing industries, as well as to coastal communities,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1 The City Council commends its duly elected representatives to the
State Legislature for co-sponsoring and supporting AB 1058, which will require the Air
Re~out~es ~- uc~ car~r~ d~ +~missions fr~im passenger and light duty trucks
in California,
SECTION 2. The City Council hereby urges the Governor and the State Legislature
to endorse and support AB 1058,
SECTION 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to send a copy of this Resolution to
the Governorof California, the Honorable Robert Hertzberg, the Honorable Herb Wesson,
the Honorable Sheila Kuehl, and the Honorable Fran Pavley.
SECTION 4 The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, and
thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
