EXTERNAL
Mayor Himmelrich, Pro Tem McCowan, and Councilmembers,
Thank you for taking up this item and creating an ad hoc committee to review the boards and commissions structure.
There are a lot of factors that must be considered, and I applaud those of you on the Council who will take a leadership
role on this task.
I would like to ask that as you consider your recommendations, you please consider opening commission membership to
students of Santa Monica College. Many students at SMC are unable to afford to live in Santa Monica. Thanks to the
Expo Line, it is not difficult to commute from parts of Los Angeles that have cheaper rent.
However, many of these students aspire to some day live in Santa Monica. And regardless of their personal aspirations,
all SMC students are part of the larger Santa Monica community. This is a valuable perspective which could help our
commissions in guiding policy.
At the last Council meeting, City Attorney Cardona clarified that City Council has the authority to change this
requirement which would allow categories of non‐residents specified by the Council to serve on commissions. I ask that
the ad hoc committee please consider including Santa Monica College students as you look at potential changes to our
commission structure.
Thank you,
