SR 05-11-2021 13E 13.E May 11, 2021 Council Meeting: May 11, 2021 Santa Monica, California 1 of 1 CITY CLERK’S OFFICE - MEMORANDUM To: Mayor and City Council From: Denise Anderson-Warren, City Clerk, Records & Elections Services Department Date: May 11, 2021 13.E Request of Mayor Himmelrich and Councilmember Brock that the City Council form an ad hoc committee of 3 council members to study and make recommendations to the City Council concerning the boards and commissions structure, including but not limited to: commission consolidation and reclassification, methods of appointment, council liaisons, and staffing of commissions. 13.E Packet Pg. 238 1 Vernice Hankins From:Jon Katz <tmbjon@gmail.com> Sent:Tuesday, May 11, 2021 9:22 AM To:councilmtgitems Cc:Kristin McCowan; Gleam Davis; Councilmember Kevin McKeown; Phil Brock; Oscar de la Torre; Christine Parra; Sue Himmelrich; Lane Dilg Subject:Item 13E EXTERNAL  Mayor Himmelrich, Pro Tem McCowan, and Councilmembers,  Thank you for taking up this item and creating an ad hoc committee to review the boards and commissions structure.  There are a lot of factors that must be considered, and I applaud those of you on the Council who will take a leadership  role on this task.   I would like to ask that as you consider your recommendations, you please consider opening commission membership to  students of Santa Monica College. Many students at SMC are unable to afford to live in Santa Monica. Thanks to the  Expo Line, it is not difficult to commute from parts of Los Angeles that have cheaper rent.   However, many of these students aspire to some day live in Santa Monica. And regardless of their personal aspirations,  all SMC students are part of the larger Santa Monica community. This is a valuable perspective which could help our  commissions in guiding policy.   At the last Council meeting, City Attorney Cardona clarified that City Council has the authority to change this  requirement which would allow categories of non‐residents specified by the Council to serve on commissions. I ask that  the ad hoc committee please consider including Santa Monica College students as you look at potential changes to our  commission structure.   Thank you,  ‐Jon K  ‐‐  tmbjon@gmail.com  cell: (215) 962‐4357  Item 13.E 05/1/21 1 of 1 Item 13.E 05/1/21 13.E.a Packet Pg. 239 Attachment: Written Comments (4572 : Council Ad Hoc for B&C matters))
