Regard the need of a traffic signal at 6th b Pico.:at the top of the hill by
the Santa Monica High School, 1 seriously believe that from the numerous accidents
some of which had personal injuries of which I have witnessed some of these myself `:
during a period of over 2 years that 1 have been on this corner during the course
of construction of the apartment building at the S.E. corner of 6th & Pico and s
.have been a Manager of same ever since.
I personally could have been killed on my own property on Pico side and I missed
being on the exact spot on the sidewalk on the North side of my property by 4
seconds when just seconds before a hot rod driver went North on 6th Street to
Pico and turned East on Pjco and was skidding his tires, the car went over the
curb hitting a concrete waall on the North side of my property on Pico, bounced
off from the wall, sheared off a steel post with a Bus Stop sign, crossed Pico
to the. North and the reckless drivers car hit and damaged several parked cars
on the North side of Pico, blew one or more tires on his own car and took off
1Jest on Pico and a Policeman apparently caught himnear 4th St. S Pico. Only a
few rweekss ago some High School kids were standing up in a convertible car which
turned fast off Pico and headed South on 6th Street and then East on Pico Court.
41hat happened there i donut know except that one kid was thrown out. and had a bad
head injury and an ambulance picked him up. This accident happened during noon hour.;
A Policeman could more than make his wages if he was in a plain car and picked up
speeders and reckless driverson this corner alone.
Some of my tenants have been grossly concerned regard the danger connected with
the traffic at this corner particularly while driving West on Pico and turning
South on 5th Street. I, among others,.£ind mvself stepping on the gas guickly to
aet around the corner because it is impossible to tell how fast the care cnma .m
1 was at a Santa Monica City Council meeting in March, 1971, while former Mayor Herb
Spurgin was presiding. if you play-the tape back you will hear Mayor Spurgin stating
that he drives down Pico nearly every day and that two very dangerous corners exist
where they need lights and he named the corner of 6th ~ Pico. You will further hear
my voice adding on the tape the dangers of the corner and requ~es~~ng that consideration
be made fora light on this corner. Therefore, I believe thatYYthe Mayor speaking
the facts~~jj-and myself adding to the facts, and the fact that the Pilot Club of Santa
Monica, Itlc., a service organization, have been on record requesting a traffic signal
on-this corner about 1 1/2 years ago, serious consideration should be made to install
an automatic three way traffic signal on the said corner, and you have my word for
it that if this can be done, I will personally donate $100.00 toward the installation
of said automatic traffic signal on Pico at 6th St., and therefore who ever is in
authority regard traffic signal approval, you rnave my word to that effect.

P.S. I am astounded that so many automatic traffic signals have been in-
stalled in other locations in the City of Santa Monica,-that obviously and
unquestionably have full view of any traffic from all directions. Also
am astounded that parents of the High School students have not barnstormed
the traffic department for safety devices for this corner.
l would like to hear from all. the departments that l am mailing this letter
to as to what is the-next step to get an automatic traffic signal on Pico
at 6th Street. ! have known that his was a dangerous corner for 25 years.
is it necessary to take up a petition in the neighborhoodY
